This book just keeps gettin bloodier and bloodier. My legs ache when I am reading this book. Ishmael and his group that he travels with get captured about 4 times in just these chapters. He has had a gun,or some kind of wepon, pointed at him many times. "'How many times do we have to come to terms with death before we find safety?'" (70).
I think that it is really sad, the things that these young boys have seen and will never forget. I also think that it is unbelievable that all this happend less than 20 years ago. If anyonw knows what the war is about (why they are fighting and what for) let me know because it gets a bit confusing in the book at times. Gracias!
The war I think seems to be fueled by fear. Now which type of fear could not tell you Kelsea. "I had tried to eat my breakfast, but fear had taken away my appetite" (107). It seems that Ishmael is only clinging to a single shred of hope to survive.
This book clearly has had remarkable success and I know this firsthand because my little sister, Sara read it in 2 days, and not to be mean, but she is no Shakespeare(and by that I meant that she doesn't like to read--sorry Sara). Hope everyone is haveing a good break!
The reason the war is going on is partialy our fault, though mostly thanks to Great Briton. Great Briton is what got the country into such a mess, but eventualy they found someone to lead them out of thier distress. Unfortunetly we killed off thier leader because we didnt like him (I think he was a Communist of something, we read about it in the Poisonwood Bible, remember). The rebels showed up after many falled presidents were elected, and started out trying to make the country better, but quikly evolved into a group of murderers. The rebels still think they are fighting for the better of the Africa, but most of them have been brainwashed when they were young to think that way. The rebels are the kind of people you hate and feel sorry for at the same time.
As far as the book goes, it certianly is getting eventfull. Normaly I would say that it's impossible to go through much and stay alive, but this is nonfiction. It disturbes me how the rebels are able do so much, and not only feel no remorse, but enjoy it. "I especialy enjoyed burning this village. We caught everyone here. No one escaped" (97). I can't wait to see how this book turns out.
I'm still waiting for the boys to be recruited and to become soldiers. They have come face to face with death way too many times it would be understandable why a soldier life could be easier. I think that it is so sad that Ishmael is so close to seeing his family when the rebel forces attack the town. " If we hadn't stopped to rest on that hill, if we hadn't run into Gasemu, I would have seen my family, I thought" (95). THis story is amazing in the thought that someone actually went through so much pain. It's incredible.
I think that it is amazing that Ishmael has been able to avoid the RUF for this long, I figured that he'd be caught and trained as a child soldier earlier in the book. I think that Ishmael has an incredibly strong will though. After all he did move on to write this book about his experiences.
